| | | | | | Race Information | | | Description: | | | | | This is the Second Annual Hoof it for Haiti 5K Run and 1 Mile Kids Fun Run! The races will be run on a scenic course in Glencoe, Illinois that winds through broad leafy village streets, a Frank Lloyd Wright subdivision, and along the Green Bay Trail. Here's how it all started and how the proceeds will be used this year.
Hoof it for Haiti was launched in 2010 by a group of deeply committed teens and parents from Sacred Heart Parish in Winnetka, Illinois as a fundraiser for the people in the Village and environs of Sassier, Haiti. This year's race proceeds will be used to help secure a safe water supply for Sassier, which will help to decrease the infant mortality rate (which is the highest in the Western Hemisphere) and prevent water-borne diseases such as typhoid fever, hepatitis, cholera and chronic diarrhea. The inaugural event was a big hit with runners, and a financial success. The proceeds from the race were used for relief supplies and services for thousands of displaced earthquake victims who had relocated to Sassier. Hoof it for Haiti is now a regular part of the ongoing assistance program between Sacred Heart Parish and St. Jean Baptiste Parish in Sassier. The two became "sister parishes" in 1999. Since that time, the humanitarianism and generosity of the Sacred Heart parishioners and students have supported the construction of a school, medical clinic and community center, as well as significant micro-economic development and terrace farming programs. Zanmi Sasye—Partners with Sassier joins Sacred Heart as co-sponsor of Hoof It for Haiti. Since 2005, Zanmi Sasye has worked with Sacred Heart and the people of Sassier on educational, health and economic development projects.
