The Ice Age Trail 50 is one of America’s “classic” ultramarathons, run every year since 1982. The ultra courses follow the Ice Age National Scenic Trail, taking runners on a tour of the unique geologic features left by the last Ice Age 10,000 years ago. Evergreen and deciduous forests, natural prairies, ponds, marshes and kettles are all part of this diverse and beautiful landscape. Rated 3/3 by Ultrarunning magazine, the terrain varies from rolling cross country ski trails to twisting, root and rock-covered single track.
The Half Marathon course is run mostly on wooded cross country ski trails within the Southern Unit of the Kettle Moraine forest and does not connect with the IAT.
The IAT50 starts and finishes about one hour southwest of Milwaukee, an hour southeast of Madison and roughly 1.5 hours northwest of Chicago. The 2014 race is honored once again to be the penultimate event in the Montrail Ultra Cup Championship Series, with the first three male and female finishers in the 50-mile race receiving automatic entries into the 2014 Western States 100.
The IAT 50-mile course record has been standing since 1988, when Andy Jones ran a 5:53:21. Last year, Cassie Scallon shattered the 18-year old women's record by 18 minutes, running a 6:46:38. Only two other age division records have been broken in the last 10 years.
Both the men's and women's 50k records were set in 2004 by Scott Creel (3:14:05) and Nikki Kimball (3:53:16), respectively. Meghan Arbogast set a new Master's women record in 2013, running the course in 4:04:29.
With plentiful aid stations, ample trail markers and experienced volunteer support, the Ice Age 50 is a great introduction to trail running and the sport of ultrarunning.
