Description:
The Dubuque Benefit Classic Half Marathon and 5K has been a Labor Day tradition for runners in Dubuque, Iowa for the past 38 years. This race that starts out in the scenic Eagle Point Park provides participants a beautiful run through the park on the bluffs of the Mississippi. The half marathoners then exit the park on a downhill and run a flat stretch along the banks of the mighty Mississippi until they return back into the park where they encounter a challenging hill that isn’t for the faint of heart. As one participant so perfectly pointed out, “The killer hill is worth it for the beautiful view at the summit.”

Dubuque is a town of 58,000 in Eastern Iowa that shares the Mississippi with Illinois and Wisconsin. It has won many national awards including having the USA Today name Dubuque #4 on it’s list of Best American Riverfronts in 2014.

Dubuque a short three-hour drive from Chicago and five hours from both the Twin Cities and St Louis, which makes it a perfect “runcation” for the long Labor Day weekend. There is plenty to do in this quaint river town to keep runners occupied before and after the race. Take in the Mississippi River via paddleboat, canoe or kayak. Hike the beautiful local trails. Sip on a glass of locally made wine. Discover inspiration at a local gallery or in the reinvented Millwork District. Enjoy a night out at the local casinos. Experience Fenlon Place Elevator, the world’s shortest, steepest railway that takes you to breathtaking views at the top of the bluffs.

To top it off, this Labor Day race is the perfect training run for those gearing up for one of the many Midwest fall marathons.
