W3 Be Active TODAY! 5k
October 1, 2011
If I am a runner, I am wanting to do this race. TODAY!
Well, your next chance will be a year from now, but on this particular crisp crystal-clear bright Whitewater morning, both the conditions and the race organization were perfect. Chip-timed perfect! (The sun itself was clocked-in digitally shortly after 6:30 AM, and then completed its course across the sky--also digitally, eh?--a little over 12 hours later. :)
Actually, the sun did warm things up following a VERY brisk early morning, but runners will almost always prefer cool and crisp running conditions than hot and muggy. And as we say, this day had these running conditions down pat.
Race Director Jen Kaina had her small army of volunteers johnny-on-the-spot for everything. Course-marking, registration, packet pick-up, even the chips-to-shoes arrangements went well. Her assistant Richard handled the pre-start announcements, and then suddenly "They're off!"
It was indeed a "small army" of runners that started and completed the course (no one got lost), and those at the back were encouraged to bring along their "man's best friends." It was a celebratory atmosphere from start to finish.
First to cross the finish line was Brandon Hinneberg, a stalwart young man if ever we've seen one. We were later told he was a scholarship winner and no wonder--it was quite awhile before second-place showed up in the person of Beau Hering. First young lady to cross the line was Jennifer Taylor, followed by Karen Trombley. Third places were won by Nicholas Morelock and Kelsey Krueger in the men's and women's divisions respectively. None of these runners was wearing parka and mittens, by the way, hence the perfect running conditions.
Other age-group winners are now clearly noted and posted along with all results elsewhere here on the RunRace network. [Race results:

] In fact, all results were posted INSTANTLY! When a finisher would come up and ask what his or her time and place was, the best answer became: "Check your phone. If you can access the Internet, you can see your results right now!"
Instant-results-online is already "the coming thing." We have seen the future, and it is...
...no doubt the best that community racing has to offer, as evidenced by the W3 5K in Whitewater, Wisconsin! See you next year!
Oh, one last note: this "adult race" was only one event in the weekend-long celebration taking place in the main public park downtown. A terrific "kids' race" took place after the adult awards were handed out, followed by what we hear was an amazing pigs' roast with family activities galore.
One more note: the winner of the kids' race also placed first in his age group in the adults' race. In other words, this amazing young man, James Dedrick (at all of 11 years old), ran TWO races--over 4 miles total--on this particular fine Wisconsin morning and, for his age, won both. Wow! Talk about future! We think it's going to be so bright that he's going to have to wear "shades."
See you next year on the first Saturday of October!
