Race Alert 1 of 2 sent Tuesday November 5th, 2019 8:45 am...
Dear Paleozoic Runners, Volunteers, and Trail Running Enthusiasts,

You're receiving this message because of your registration or expressed interest in our 2019 Paleozoic Trail Runs - Cambrian Fall II. You may click for a listing of "Who's Registered" for our two event distances, and volunteers:
https://www.runrace.net/findarace.php?id=19313IL&tab=a3

Race week is upon us! With race day, Saturday November 9th just four days away, consider this the first of two "Race Alerts" that will be sent during this week, prior to Cambrian Fall II. It's my intention to send one more "Race Alert" on Friday evening (race eve) after assessing the latest course conditions. That second and final race alert will include participant number assignments and our rules of competition.

We ask that you take a moment to review and familiarize yourself with these important race details...

** How to get there:
Use the following address / GPS coordinates to assist with your directions to Palos Park Woods-North, Grove #1, which is the location of our start/finish area...
Address: 11307 Kean Ave, Palos Park, IL 60464
GPS: 41.680282, -87.843872

** Parking:
Parking at Palos Park Woods-North, Grove #1 has 75 general spaces, plus two handicap spaces. Many registrants have indicated that they'll be carpooling with at least one other participant. It's somewhat likely that we will fill this primary lot. If necessary, nearby spillover parking is available at...
* ~23 spots at McClaughrey Spring Woods (.2 miles south on Kean Avenue).
* ~75 spots at Palos Park Woods-South (.4 miles south on Kean Avenue, .3 miles east on 119th St).
You may view our map of spillover parking under "Race Detail" through the link above. We will have traffic volunteers posted on race day to assist with parking, and possibly shuttling. Please be prepared to use spillover parking and allow enough time to walk / jog / warm-up to start/finish area. We encourage carpooling where possible. Park between the lines, in appropriate spaces, and always on the pavement.

** Racecourse:
Paleozoic Trail Runs - Cambrian Fall II's racecourse lies entirely within the Sag Valley Trail System, Region 7 of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, which is located approximately 22 miles southwest of downtown Chicago. Palos Park Woods-North, Grove #1 serves as race start/finish area and our primary aid station. Our racecourse is an "out -n- back," following segments of the Yellow Trail, Purple Trail, and Green Trail systems. Comprised of wide, crushed gravel paths, the course is easy-to-follow and not-too-technical, but should be considered "quite hilly" by Chicagoland standards. Sections along the Green Trail are a bit less maintained and may be somewhat overgrown with grass and erosion. This time of year... long stretches of trail may be blanketed under fallen leaves.

Published under on our "Race Detail" (link above) is a customized racecourse trail map. If you like to run with a map in hand, we recommend that you print and bring along a copy of the map. We may have a few printed paper copies of this trail map available on race day at runner check-in.

Our racecourse will be marked by a combination of...
* color-coded plastic plates staked along trail-side.
* orange arrows spray-painted at intersections.
* color-coded flagging and color-coded wire-flags where appropriate.

** Road Crossings:
Our racecourse crosses over roads at two locations, which makes for four crossings per lap...
* Yellow Trail at Kean Avenue, ~1.5 miles outbound, ~14 miles inbound.
* Yellow Trail at Willow Springs Road, ~4.4 miles outbound, ~11.1 miles inbound.
Runners will not have right-of-way at road crossings, and must obey the supervision of Forest Preserve District of Cook County road-crossing police. Please be respectful of FPDCC police... they're on duty to help our race and ensure your safety!

** Runner Check-In / Packet Pickup:
All participants must check in on race morning prior to the start of their event. Packet pickup will take place at our race start/finish area, Palos Park Woods-North, Grove #1. Packet pickup will begin at 7:30 am and conclude prior to the start of each event (8:30 am for the 50-Km, 9:30 am for the 25-Km). Basically, packet pick-up will consist of...
* step one: you sign our race waiver.
* step two: receive your packet (including bib number, pins, matching timing chip, race shirt, etc).
In your packet you'll find a bib number for wearing on the front of your body, and a velcro ankle strap with timing chip for 50-Km runners... shoe-tag chips for 25-Km runners. All chips are numbered to match bib numbers.
50-Km runners with ankle straps... peel back the velcro tab, wrap the strap around either ankle with the orange chip facing outside of your ankle, safely re-fasten the velcro connection.
25-Km runners with shoe tags... place the tag on top of your shoe and attach to your laces using twist-ties, which will be available at runner check in.
All runners... cross over the timing mats that will be deployed at the start, finish, and checkpoints (manned aid stations). We'd love to see everyone make their finish, but even if you don't... return your timing chip at completion of your race.

** Aid Stations:
* Palos Park Woods-North, Grove #1... serves as race start/finish area and our primary aid station. 50-Km participants will pass-through, and turnaround for their second lap at ~15.5 miles.
* Cambrian II Green, Green Trail & Will Cook Road... is our satellite & turnaround aid station. 25-Km participants will arrive after ~7.77 miles. 50-Km participants will arrive after ~7.77 miles, and again after ~23.3 miles.
* Our manned aid stations will be stocked with water, gatorade, chips, pretzels, fruit, candy, and other stuff to help keep you going.
* Unmanned (water only)... a midpoint, unmanned station will be located trail-side at ~4.4 miles outbound, and ~11.1 miles inbound of each lap.
* Greener with your help... do you own a water bottle? Please bring it along for your race. Our aid station volunteers love nothing more than filling your bottle, which helps eliminate one-use cup waste.

** Drop Bags:
* Paleozoic 50-Km participants... you may consider packing drop bags, one for each of our two manned aid stations, depending on your anticipated needs. We will transport your drop bag to our turnaround station after event start, and return it upon race completion. Be sure to mark drop bags with your name and race number, and intended aid station. Please be considerate... pack lightly with minimal essentials.
* Paleozoic 25-Km participants... because of manpower limitations we discourage your usage of drop bags, but if you must... pack lightly with minimal essentials and we'll transport your bag to our turnaround station after event start, and return it upon race completion.

** Time Limitations:
We do not have official aid station cutoffs for events of our Paleozoic Trail Runs - Cambrian Fall II, however we are bound by usage rules of the FPDCC, which include hours of operation - "Forest Preserve District hours are sunrise to sunset." On Saturday November 9th the forest preserve will open at sunrise: 6:34 am. The forest preserve will close at sunset: 4:36 pm. Further... our race permit requires that we hire-back FPDCC police at our road crossings. They'll be on duty from 8:30 am -until- 4:00 pm. That gives 50-Km participants a full eight (8) hours, and 25-Km participants seven (7) hours to cover the course and complete their distance. If you believe that you might not be able to cover your event distance, making the final road crossing, which is 1.5 miles from the finish line by 4:30 pm, please get in touch with me. We'll do our best to arrange for an "early start" specifically for you.

** FPDCC Rules and Regulations:
Our Paleozoic Trail Runs - Cambrian Fall II, and all participants are subject to rules and regulations as published by the Forest Preserve District of Cook County:
http://fpdcc.com/preserves-and-trails/rules-and-regulations/

Thanks for your attention to this, the first of two "Race Alerts" that will be sent prior to race day. On behalf of co-RD (and wife) Michelle, and our team of considerate volunteers, we're delighted that you're joining us and we're sure that this version of Paleozoic Trail Runs - Cambrian Fall II will prove an epic adventure!

Please let me know if you have any questions.
'til Friday evening, and our Race Alert #2 of 2 email message,
staying tuned,
Bill Thom
