Thanksgiving Race Results & Race Report-2018
Fearless Leader's Race Report: Riis Park Striders 48th Annual Thanksgiving Day Race Results--see attached
Conditions were overcast, windy and mush. The cold day still saw a record number of finishers in the 1 mile race. The cold temperature and muddy spots on the course made most times slower than in 2017. Big thanks to Judith Ragusca, mother of Joe Mittel, for donating prizes for the winners. This marks the 23rd year she has done this in memory of her son and Riis Park Strider legend.
The Shamrock TC, last year's winners, did not show up leaving the door open for Riis Park A to take the crown. The Chicago Road Runners made their 1st appearance and took 2nd place. This was the first year of 3 sets of team trophies and the Don Amidei TC crushed Riis Park B for 3rd.
Michelle Donato Thom celebrated her birthday by winning the women's 5K for the 8th time--she first won in 1999. Slower times were recorded this year due to the cold and muddy conditions.
Thanks to the following for making this all happen: Sylvia Angarone (finish line), Cheryl Benson (5k results), Peter Block and Bill Kearns (finish chute), Bill Thom (finish clock and race starter), Renee Phillips, Paul Hendrickson, Mike Vlasak (registration and results), Ken Dietz (course making and finish line), Howard Von Wedelsaedt (food and giveaways) and Chris Precht for making it all happen.
The annual Mike Bastian 6 mile race will be held on December 22nd with the course being on the sidewalk around the park. Medals to all 6 mile finishers and awards to all 1 and 3 lap finishers.
