Talk about a jam-packed park! Wow! I'm thinking you couldn't have wedged another event inside those Fairgrounds on this particular Saturday--with a crowbar! There were so many special events happening, that not even the guy directing traffic knew what they all were. For example, when I got there, he didn't even know about the Crownfest 5K, despite the banner on the gates, the name on the Fairgrounds marquee, and the open building with the sign in front of it not twenty feet from where he was standing. ;-)
Whoa! Pay attention, man; this little footrace was about to rock and roll the park!!
As indeed it did! Way over a hundred racers, runners, and walkers all managed to find their way to the open building and the official start line, no matter what. And what a great time they had! Check out all the smiling faces in the photos!
Despite the traffic and the jams and the trucks trying to unload for the Crown Beer Fest (of which this race was a part)--OMG, they were unloading trucks right there in the chutes!--the race went off (and came back) without a hitch. Not even a little taste of rain could dampen the spirit, er, spirits, eh?
The race started right around 12 noon and concluded in plenty of time for those who wanted to continue their revelry by partaking in the food and beverages of the Crown Beer Fest which opened its gates at 2 pm. As I learned, Crown Brewing is a local brewery in Crown Point, Indiana, easily earning the support of hundreds (if not thousands) of festival goers and post-race partiers. (We should've stayed longer!) Hey, instead of T-shirts, this race gave participants beer glasses! It was a blast!
Conveniently, the Crownfest 5K did NOT bump into any of the other special events (which is also a testament to how big the Fairgrounds actually are) largely because the scenic (and, yes, a little hilly) course wound through several of the residential areas outside the park. Plenty of runners vouched for how beautiful (and hilly) the whole course was. You'll want to put this one on your calendar for next year, for sure!
Misty Chandos of Fleet Feet Sports in Schererville did an outstanding job of race directing, and all her helpful volunteers did great work as well. Check out the "View Photos" webpage for all the happy photographic evidence, and if you find yourself in a picture and would like a high-def copy of it, just email (see "Contact Us") and ask. Thanks to everyone at the Fairgrounds (including our friends the traffic controllers :-) who helped to make the Crownfest 5K the great success that it was!
