Tiger Tear…ing up Elmwood Park!
Sunday October 19th, 2014
2014 Tiger Tear 5k
By the time the "go" signal was given around 9:00 AM Sunday, Oct. 19th, the sky was blue, the temperature was crisp (but perfect for running), and there were nearly 170 participants lined up on Fullerton Avenue. They were just in front of Elmwood Park High School ("Home of the Tigers") and right behind the EPPD patrol car that served as the lead vehicle.
And the celebration began! The joyful runners and walkers cruised behind the cruiser, "tearing up" (so to speak) a big square of neighborhood, coming back out onto Fullerton, heading west and south to actually enter Tiger Stadium, and finally encircling half the track to a festive finish--right under the "FINISH" banner atop the big arch festooned with balloons. What a joyous sight to see, run through, and experience by every runner and walker of nearly every age!
If you don't believe us, have a look at the large collection of photos that follow. You can "click" to enlarge each one, and (here's a bonus) if you see one of which you'd like a full high-def copy of the original, just click on the "Contact Us" tab and ask. We'll be happy to provide you with such a "souvenir," the likes of which you can't get anywhere else!
The three ladies who co-directed this race worked tirelessly and "the proof was in the pudding," as they say. The event went off without a hitch, the weather fully cooperated, and, as far as we could tell, everyone was pleased, as the 100th Anniversary Celebration of Elmwood Park's incorporation continued well after the race was over. Our personal thanks go out to Pat McNulty, Eileen Lepore, and Kim Parrilli.
By the way, no "tears" were shed (none that we could see anyway). The title of this delightful annual event has more to do with "tearing around the block" (speed) or "tearing up the phone book" (strength) than it does with droplets descending from anyone's eye. "Tears of joy," however, just might be the exception.
Well done, Elmwood Park! And here's to another 100 years!!
