Inaugural 50-Km and 25-Km Trail Runs on the Palos Trail System!

Wednesday March 20th, 10:30 am... Self-Reporting Results
We've sent out a call for your GPS data detailing your race. Did you run with a GPS device? If so... send me your GPS distance covered, elapsed time, and if possible an internet link to your recorded data. We are evolving a Self-Reporting list at:

Sunday March 17th, 6:00 pm... Preliminary Results
Hey Paleozoic runners & volunteers... wanted to send out a sincere "thank you" for your participation, yesterday in our first-ever 25-Km / 50-Km race along the unpaved paths of the Palos Trail system. It certainly was a challenging day and we appreciate your efforts, dedication, and resiliency!
Oops... despite heroic efforts our early-attacking trail-marking team had their progress hampered by the snow / icy conditions, along with disappearance of many Friday pre-race paint markings. In hindsight, this is far too much detail for a team of two. I take full responsibility for this oversight, putting our team in a difficult position, and all of the cascading effects that followed in its wake.
Our results are preliminary. Let me know of discrepancies that you can identify. I have data splits to pinpoint runners locations through our checkpoints, but could use help in organizing into proper distances. I'd like to have results finalized by this Wednesday Friday, March 22nd.
Most feedback has been positive... we're going to get this "right," so feel free to email me.

Friday March 15th, 6:45 pm... Trail Conditions
Hey Paleozoic runners... just got to a computer for the first time today... apologize for this delayed posting. Be advised that trail conditions are "challenging!" Earlier today Terry Madl and I bike-rode the entire 25-km distance. There are many "soft-icy" stretches... most where you may be able to skirt along the outside shoulder of the trail, but a few where you may have to crunch right through the soft ice and melting snow. I wouldn't classify these segments as "treacherous," but certainly advise cautious trail running. I expect these icy conditions to be with us on race day. I encourage use of your most aggressively treaded trail shoes. Your shoes and feet will probably get wet.
We'll do everything in our power to make sure you have a good race!

Journey back in time to this rollicking run along forested, unpaved paths of our Palos Trail System within the Cook County Forest Preserve. We've charted a stimulating course that's sure to satisfy your primordial instinct to "go long." Are you up to the challenge? Choose your distance wisely... take your training seriously... then come race day, "finish or fossilize!"

Please join us for our inaugural Paleozoic Trail Runs, Saturday March 16, 2013. For your adventure we will provide:
  • your choice between our ultra distance of 50 kilometers, or our one-lap tour of 25 kilometers
  • space for 200 eager runners... permit restrictions limit race participation to the first 200 registrants, which is a total combined count of participants from both events... it's possible that we'll meet capacity, so don't wait too long before committing (hint : )
  • chip timing & scoring with instant results published on RunRace.net for all participants
  • finisher awards for all participants... that is, those who "did not fossilize"
  • awards in both events for top-two overall, top-two masters, and top finishers in 10-year age groups for both sexes
  • an accurately measured, clearly-marked course, with well-stocked aid stations occruing at ~5-mile intervals
  • our course is approved by the Cook County Forest Preserve (permit pending approved) and will be policed at its three road-crossings
Registration is now open... click the "Registration" tab above to submit yours!

Our Paleozoic Trail Runs race course lies entirely within the Palos Trail System, Region 6 of the Forest Preserve District of Cook County, which is located approximately 22 miles southwest of downtown Chicago. Wolf Road Woods, grove #44 serves as race start / finish area and our primary aid station. To access this area follow Wolf Road from its intersection with 95th Street (near Archer Avenue), traveling ¾ mile south through the forest preserve, to parking at the road terminus.

A variety of surfaces make up our Paleozoic Trail Runs race course. Wide crushed gravel paths comprise about 70% of the course. Along the way you'll encounter a mix of narrower, more rugged dirt trails, occasional grass segments, and even stretches of eroding asphalt. These non-crushed gravel sections can be moderately rocky with the occasional stray root. Compared to most others in greater Chicagoland our course should be considered as "quite hilly." Trail shoes are recommended, but not necessary, especially if conditions are dry leading up to race day. The course will be well-marked, with fully stocked aid stations at ~5-mile intervals. There will be four (4) street crossings per lap, policed by FPDCC personnel. Each lap is 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) in length.
