Title:1st Annua Pike Lake Powder Hill 5k/10k
Date:Saturday April 21st, 2012
Author:Hans Wegesser
Report:
I was a little nervous the day before the race as I was marking the course. Temps were at around 40 degrees, cloudy, and looking like more rain. Two days in a row of rain. I was thinking this was going to get ugly. Then at 7:00 pm, the sun came out and all the clouds disappeared.
Saturday morning was gorgeous. 30 walk-ons signed up along with the pre-registered we already had. The Hartford Food Pantry received many generous donations. Thank you all for that. The course was in great shape.
There were as many first time trail runners as there were veterans. From our youngest runner, Ethan-Peer Drake-age 7,to our oldest runner Roddie Larsen-age 75.
The 5k winners male and female were: Ted Shue 20:32, lyndsey Bell 30:02
The 10k winners male and female were: Brian Seegert 46:17, Angela Dembeck 57:01
The course followed Pike Lake trails and Ice Age trails. Both courses were challenging, with the 10k course climbing 1350 feet to the top of Powder Hill at the 3.5 mile mark. For all the first time trail runners, it was a heck of a way to learn about trail running. Everyone finished and everyone had fun.
The custom awards, made by our sponsor Creative License, were a huge hit.
Our milion dollar timing system was flawless, although with the kind of numbers we had this year, we may have to upgrade next year.
there will be a fall edition of the 5k/10k. Check your local running calendars for dates and times.
Thank You to everyone involved in putting this event on, and Thank You to all the runners that came out and enjoyed running through the woods on a beautiful spring day!
