Dash into the New Year 5k in Words and Pictures
Saturday December 29th, 2012
Almost as many runners ran as snowflakes fell in Matteson (Illinois not Wisconsin) on the Saturday morning before the New Year. But judging from the smiling faces (or sprinting grimaces) as they crossed the finish line, nobody seemed to worry the flurries--or mind them much--although they might've chilled the camera a tad. See the photos that follow to see what I mean.
Bright and early Saturday (well, it was cloudy--so not so "bright"--and 8:00 AM--so not all that early either) a whole lot of brave, happy, fast and not-so-fast folks showed up inside the beautiful Matteson Community Center's gymnasium to either register or claim their pre-registered bib numbers, T-shirts and goody bags, and then to warm up, stretch, visit, get excited, and/or kibitz with the timekeepers. Everybody had a good time, until it was time to step outdoors, line up behind the "Start" line (written in fancy orange letters), and then proceed to have an even better time! Blazing through the Village's westside neighborhoods and back and forth over Interstate 57, the whole pack began reappearing behind the two young men who led the charge and finished in 17 minutes!
It was truly amazing--a near photo finish--but one of the timekeepers with the camera DIDN'T get the photo! No, he was having to re-direct the Nissan pace car away from the chip-timing mats in order to prevent crushed chip-timing mats! So Number 1 and Number 2 finishers didn't get their pictures taken. :-( Very sorry about that. Perhaps another "photog" got 'em? The first finisher you see here, then, is actually the 3rd Place man. The first woman made it in 21 minutes. You can see all the exact times in the "Results" for this race.
The awards ceremony afterwards was warm and friendly (emphasis on the "warm" AND the "friendly") and the master of ceremonies was none other than Anthony Burton, the MCC Director himself--who also ran the race! Good job, sir! And thanks to you and all the employees and volunteers of the Matteson Community Center who helped to make this yet another fun and memorable Matteson event!
Happy New Year to all!
