Hoosier Burn Camp 5K Run For a Good Cause
Saturday September 28th, 2013
Rich Limacher and Bill Thom
The weather couldn't have been more perfect for the 1st Annual Hoosier Burn Camp 5K Run. The race was well received by the running community (nearly two dozen folks came out and signed up that very morning) and the entire event was wonderfully well supported by the Merrillville Fire Department. Not only did they bring firetrucks to showcase around the Merrillville High School parking lot, but they also hoisted the American flag high overhead by means of that famous extension ladder mounted on their "hook & ladder" engine. And not only all that, but an actual rescue helicopter made an appearance as well, landing and taking off in the parking lot near the start/finish.
Many fire department volunteers and others helped with race organization, and RunRace did the chip timing. Since the race proceeds are given to Indiana's actual Burn Camp for kids (click on our "Groups" tab to find more information), pre-race speakers provided insight into what a great cause this is. We also met a firefighter who is a burn victim himself; but, he revealed, it didn't happen when he was a kid. Children tend to suffer much worse than adults from serious burns, due to appearing "different" and being stigmatized by their childish peers.
Speakers before the start informed the crowd that firefighters form a very special bond with children they rescue from fires, and their wanting to help them afterwards is what got Indiana's Burn Camp--and indeed this local 5K fundraising race--started in the first place.
Despite a slight "glitch" in course marshaling (due possibly to someone removing a directional sign) some of the walking participants inadvertently cut the course short and finished on the "wrong side" of the clock. They got their pictures taken anyway, and at least two ladies we met actually went back to where they took the wrong turn... and from there proceeded to walk the true remainder of the course. They wanted to be SURE to do the full 5K!

By the way, our overall winner Michael Abramczyk said afterwards that he's a junior high cross-country coach. We agreed that he'll now command even greater respect from his charges for having absolutely WON a race himself! We think his "kids" have someone pretty terrific to take after, and something pretty special to aspire to.
All in all, it was a GREAT morning for running in Northwest Indiana. Check this one out for next year!
