3rd Annual Fall-Season Paleozoic 50-Km and 25-Km
Trail Runs!

Our fall celebration of "going long" made use of the Palos trails of Willow Springs. We've charted this specific racecourse two times now... the other being Devonian Fall in 2014. This was the sixth running of our biannual race, which has always offered the event distances of 50 kilometers and 25 kilometers.

Saturday November 14 race-day conditions: low temperature of 31° F, high temperature of 58° F, SSW winds at 9 mph, gusting to 18 mph with maximum gust speeds of 27 mph, sunrise 6:39 am, sunset 4:33 pm. Historically, Saturday November 14th has averages: high temperature of 50° F, low temperature of 35° F.

Weather-wise, this was the best ever day in our three-year history. The racecourse was dry and fast... however, runners did have to deal with three sections where tress had recently fallen across the trail. I was able to push one of those trees to a point where it covered only half the trail. As for the other two... everyone had to vault over (or under) one tree, and bushwhack through the other's brushy section.

Volunteers Jeni Goodwin, Kelly Goforth, Patti Downey, Tom Kohler, and Bob Thom reported early-morning at Pioneer Woods, Grove #2 for aid station set up and to greet runners at the 7:30 am check-in / packet pick up.

Our 50-Km event was underway at 8:30 am sharp, followed by the 25-Km at 9:32 am. A three-quarter mile grassy parade loop circled runners past cheering spectators, then off they raced the varying Palos Trail system of unpaved paths.

A midpoint, unmanned aid station was set trailside at approximately 3.6-miles outbound. Full-service amenities awaited, staffed by Patti and Tom at Wolf Road Woods, Grove #2, which served as our turnaround aid station. Paleo-Perm 50-Km runners completed two full laps of our out-n-back racecourse, while Paleo-Perm 25-Km runners enjoyed a one-lap tour.

At the finish, awaiting all runners... customized finisher-medals, two different soup choices (chili, and vegetable), along with a sun-drenched grove for relaxing and replenishing. Top overall and masters runners earned very special awards. Top-three age division runners collected special pint-glass awards. First-time ultramarathon finishers earned "My First Ultra" pint-glass awards.

Congratulations to our swift runners of Paleozoic Trail Runs - Permian Fall!

Race Director's Special Mentions...

Nadia Grisolia, Paleo-Perm 25-Km, #33
During the summer of 2015 Nadia dedicated herself to the goal of a "marathon finish." It would be her first. She put in the work, including the long-distance training runs, but when it came time to race her multiple targeted marathons kept getting cancelled. As a workaround... Nadia chose Permian Fall 25-Km and covered the event distance, then went back on course for an extra 10.8 miles out-n-back, measured by her GPS watch, returning with a full 26.3 miles. Congratulations, Nadia... your first-ever marathon!

Mersedeh Wiskowski, Paleo-Perm 25-Km, #104
In past versions of Paleozoic Trail Runs Mersedeh has served as crew for husband, Dave, and together they've also provided galleries of race photos. In this version of Permian Fall, Mersedeh set a distance-PR by 5½ miles when she finished the 25-Km event!

Great race, great weather, great people. Thank you Bill and others for all the work putting on this race. Other than missing a turn after the downed tree because hikers were obscuring the view, the race went really well for me. I was fatigued beyond belief, but was walking normally again by Tuesday. I'm hoping to do this again in the spring, depending upon what's on the calendar when CARA finally announces the series for 2016.
