2021 Chicago Lakefront 50/50
22nd Annual Fall-Season Chicago Lakefront Ultras 50/50
The 22nd annual fall edition of the Chicago Lakefront Ultras 50/50 made a most triumphant return to the city's Foster Beach House north-side location, following last fall's course modifications and temporary move to the Jackson Park south-side location due to continued restrictions from the Coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic.
Essentially all of the previous outdoor event safety precautions for the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic have been lifted, so we were back to running our normal course route and race without restrictions. However, the high winds from the northeast threw a wrench in the works the day of the race resulting in the last 0.15 mile portion of the 50 mile course just past Oak Street Beach being closed as it was under water from huge waves off the lake. So the 50 milers ran as far as they could up to where the lakefront path was closed and used that as the south turnaround. The short distance was made up by adding it back to the north turnaround going past the Foster Beach House. The 50K course was not impacted.
Thanks to the ultra running community of volunteers who generously staffed the aid stations...
* North Ave Beach House - Flatlander Ultrarunners:
Linda Lopez, Jimmy Jones, Jen Birkner, Dave Secord, Pete Figueroa, Christopher Connelly, Cathy Sweeney. Jimmy fired up his Coleman grill and served up brats and hot dogs throughout the day. Someone might have brought a bottle of Malort and Fireball too???
* Foster Ave Beach House:
Kristine Yoon, Meghan Newton, Sasha Johnson, Carl Shook, Jeff Constien, Matt O'Bryant, and Marc Anguiano all helped ensure people crossed the timing mats at the turnaround and assisted with hydration and nutrition throughout the day. Holly Lindroth helped out in the afternoon (after she dropped from the 50 mile race, went out for pancakes, then came back to take over the aid station in the afternoon).
* Morning Setup Crew at Foster Ave Beach House:
Carl Shook, Jeff Constien, Matt O'Bryant, and Marc Anguiano
* Picture Guys:
Matt O'Bryant brought his DSLR camera and took tons of pictures all day capturing most of the day and many finish line photos (the link to the Google photo gallery is below). I'm sure you also saw and heard Bernard Lyles out there taking video clips and pictures on his iPhone while cheering on all the runners. Bernard is an avid FaceBook user and posted lots of stuff there. Bill Thom also took photos, mostly of the finish line, and those are posted below at the end of the race report.
* Check-in / Welcome crew:

We had twenty-some 50K runners request an early start with most of them starting off with the 50 mile race. A couple 50 milers and 50K runners also early started just before the 50 mile race start. 35 runners started the 50 mile race; 135 runners started the 50K race. Of those runners, we had 31 finishers in the 50 mile earning a belt buckle and 118 finishers in the 50K earning colorful finishers' medals.
The 50 mile race started at 7:02:55 am, under just a hint of darkness as the sunrise was 7:20 am. The 50K race started at 8:00:30 am. Strong winds out of the NE at 15-20 mph persisted all day long making the northbound running a bit more challenging. The temperature was slightly cold but decent in the mid-40's in the morning and climbing to the mid-50's during the day. It even felt like 60's when the sun peaked through the mostly cloudy skies a couple times. The wind started to die down a bit as the afternoon went on, maybe down to about 10 mph by the time we hit sunset at 5:30 pm.
* 50 Mile Race Top Finishers:
The 50 Mile overall top finisher was Jimmy Kasper, 41 of Joliet who ran a 50 mile PR and received his first ultra win with a time of 6:53:12.0. Close behind was Vincent DiFrancesco, 21 of Cincinnati, OH finishing 7:12:15.1; followed by Eric Shrader, 25 of Chicago just two minutes behind in 7:14:54.4.
The 50 Mile female podium started with Inga Maurer, 38 of Chicago leading all the females in a time of 7:55:22.0 followed by Eliza Duddy, 33 of Marlborough, MA and Shonda Morris, 43 of Sudbury, MA crossing the finish line together in times of 8:50:41.0 and 8:50:41.1, respectively.
* 50K Race Top Finishers:
The 50K race top six finishers filled out the male and female podium with a finishing order of M, F, M, F, F, M. Brian Robinson, 35 of Chicago led all runners to the finish in 3:55:20.2. Close behind were Anastasia Wohar, 35 of King of Prussia, PA leading all female runners to the finish in 3:59:09.0; next was Mark Wehrman, 35 of Chicago in 4:03:11.5; Angie Darbyson, 39 of Madison, WI in 4:12:38.4; Rosalie Shyu, 28 of Chicago in 4:21:56.4; and Benjamin Kornfeld, 37 of Evanston in 4:34:52.9
The 50 mile race Overall Top Male Jimmy Kasper, and Overall Top Female Inga Maurer as well as the 50K Overall Top Male Brian Robinson, and Overall Top Female Anastasia Wohar earned etched crystal column awards. 10-year top-three age group winners earned etched Chicago Lakefront Ultras "made the podium" pint glasses. Nearly 40% of our runners were either First Time Ultra Finishers or First Time 50 Mile Finishers earning "I Survived My First Ultra" pint glasses.
