This wicked-coldest-by-far-ever rollicking eleventh annual spring celebration of "going long" was contested at our `north racecourse` within the Palos Trail System - Region 6. Our north racecourse has a wonderful mix of wide crushed gravel paths, narrower more rugged dirt-rocks-roots trails, occasional grass stretches, and even segments of eroding asphalt. Each out-n-back lap totals a running distance of 7.767 miles. 50-Km = two laps; 25-Km = one lap. Set up with its start/finish aid station at Pioneer Woods Grove #2, and satellite aid station at Wolf Road Woods Grove #2. Devonian Spring II marked the seventh time on our `north racecourse`, and twentieth running of our semiannual race, which has always featured the event distances of 50 kilometers and 25 kilometers.

Frigid conditions and raw-wind-chills endured throughout the day with temperatures ranging from 14° - 25°F. Runners reported coldest of all areas were the aid stations at Wolf Road Woods, wind-blown start/finish hilltop at Pioneer Woods, and serpentine hill near Bullfrog Lake. Ironically the ultra cold temperatures froze-over soft stetches and racers took advantage of faster/firmer footing. Paleozoic runners are an opportunist breed and despite extemely raw conditions this version, Devonian Spring II achieved an astounding finishing rate of 92%!
The 25 Kilometer race
From the start, circling the parade loop racing downhill leading all others were Brandon LaBash (his second Paleozoic) and Katalin Anstandig (her first Paleozoic and first 25-Km). Both would go on to finish first in their respective sex divisions. Less than two minutes behind, Michael D'Aquila finished as second male, with Graham Rosby as third male and fourth overall. Defending her Masters Champion title Jara Kern (her third Paleozoic) finished as second female, closely persued by Jeni Goodwin (her tenth Paleozoic) as third overall female.
The 50 Kilometer ultramarathon
A six-man pack consisting of David Curtin, Dan Kittivanichkulkrai, Paul Fortunato, Jason Sikora, Christopher Mileto, Jim Curtin led runners out to Wolf Road Woods aid station all within a couple minutes of each other. Dan (his second Paleozoic; defending Masters Champion) did best to hold pace and go on to finish first overall, with brothers David (his eleventh Paleozoic; past Champion) finishing second, and Jim (his third Paleozoic) finishing third overall. Meanwhile, among the fairer sex Wendy Jay (her fifth Paleozoic) found a good early rhythm which she maintained to the finish as top female, with Marta Borkowska (seventh Paleozoic; defending Female Champion) finishing second place, and Colleen Montgomery (second Paleozoic after 7-year absence) coming in third place.
Nearing the finish line
Circling the seemingly-never-ending-uphill `parade loop`, through the Paleozoic feather flags, under the race banner, across the finish line timing mats, awaiting all runners... customized finisher-medals, special awards, optional beer, hot red-beans-n-rice, and hot cocoa. First-time ultramarathon finishers earned "My First Ultra" pint-glass awards. Five-time Paleozoic finishers collected special zipper-draw-string shoe bag awards. A Ten-time-finisher special pint-glass was earned by Jeni Goodwin (Jeni's volunteered ten times too ;-). Leading all veteran-paleo-dinosaur-multitime finishers was Les Hockenberry with 18 finishes; 388.490 miles. Sam Severson finished his 12th time, all 50-Kms with an impressive tally of 372.958 miles!
