The 24th Annual Fall Edition of the Chicago Lakefront Ultras 50/50 was held once again at the city's Foster Beach House north-side location. The weather was pretty decent by Chicago Lakefront Ultras standards. It was chilly with temps between 40-50°F all day, windy but not too windy with a pretty constant 10-15 mph wind out of the north or northeast, mostly overcast but no chance of rain (always a plus). No one was complaining too much. The next day showed us what it could have been - cold rain, stronger winds, and temps in the 30's to 40's. Let's just say Saturday was a much better day for the race.
Thanks to the ultra running community of volunteers who generously staffed the aid stations...
* North Ave Beach House - Flatlander Ultrarunners:
Linda Lopez (Aid Station Captain), Jung Kim, Chris Connelly, Matt Gilbert, Mireya Ibarra, Alex Gliwa, Eleanor Carter, Camille Wilson Brune, Kristin Van Andel, and Amy Pointon. A special thanks to Linda Lopez and Jung Kim for arriving at 6:00am to set up and to Kristin Van Andel for staying until the last runner came through, then closed down and cleaned up the aid station. We got lots of comments from the runners saying they had never seen aid station volunteers so genuinely caring and supportive of the runners. You guys rock! And a special invitation to all the Chicago Lakefront Runners - Anyone who is interested in joining the Flatlanders Facebook group, go check out the "Flatlander Ultrarunners in Chicagoland" group and join! The Flatlanders host many events and small group runs constantly throughout the year.
* Foster Ave Beach House:
Marc Anguiano (Volunteer Coordinator), Justin Heller, Jamie Simon, Nicholas Serra, Tejas Kannan, Brittany Mangin, Grace Sidler, Daniel Sinde, and Eleanor Carter all helped ensure people crossed the timing mats at the turnaround and assisted with hydration and nutrition throughout the day. Special thanks to Marc Anguiano who was the Volunteer Coordinator for the Foster Ave Beach House area. Marc helped tremendously with emailing and organizing the volunteers as well as taking the lead on setting up the start area. Justin Heller also has helped out at numerous Chicago Lakefront Ultras events and was critical to making things run smoothly in the morning. Both of these guys showed up first thing in the morning and stayed until late in the day. The race could not have run smoothly without these guys and the rest of the volunteers. Thanks to all of you!
* Morning Setup Crew at Foster Ave Beach House:
Marc Anquiano, Justin Heller, Jamie Simon, Nicholas Serra, Tejas Kannan, Brittany Mangin, Grace Sidler, Daniel Sinde, and Eleanor Carter
* Check-in / Welcome crew:
Grace Sidler, Daniel Sinde, and Eleanor Carter
* Finish line recording / Awards managing:
Justin Heller, Jamie Simon
* Pictures:
You likely saw a guy with a very nice camera taking lots of pictures near the finish line and on the course. He captured pictures of nearly everyone. This person was Paul Henderson. Paul was kind enough to give copies to Marc Anguiano who helped posted them on the shared Google Photos album listed below in this report where you can view and download them for free. Thanks Paul for the awesome pictures!
RACE RECAP:
We had fourteen runners request an early start, with three 50 milers getting out at about 6:15 am along with four 50K "early-early" starters. The remaining seven 50K early starters took off at 7:00 am with the 50 mile race. Overall we had 46 runners who started the 50 mile race and 105 runners who started the 50K race. Of those runners, we had 33 finishers in the 50 mile earning a belt buckle and 98 finishers in the 50K earning a shiny, updated finishers' medal.
The 50 mile race started at 7:01:37 am under partly cloudy skies and the attempting sunrise. The 50K race started exactly one hour later at 8:01:37 am. Everyone was hopeful that the relatively light winds in the morning at the start were going to dissipate throughout the day, but that didn't happen. The winds seemed to pick up a little as they shifted slightly. We were also hoping to get temperatures into the 50's with talk of maybe touching 60°F, but that didn't happen either.
* 50 Mile Race Top Finishers:
The 50 Mile overall top finisher was Isaac Schuetz, 27 of Platteville, WI who ran a swift time of 6:24:08. Not far behind was the First Female (2nd Overall) Rachel Burke, 39 of Chicago finishing 6:40:00 - Rachel is a Chicago Lakefront veteran runner. Andrew Redden, 29 of Chicago rounded out the Overall podium with the 3rd place Overall finish with a time of 6:59:25. Wow, how about that... the top 3 finishers all under 7 hours!
The 50 Mile Female podium started with Rachel Burke finishing 2nd Overall as mentioned above, followed by Marina Dragatsis, 24 of Chicago in a time of 8:33:47 and then Joanna Neuberg, 42 of New York, NY in 9:14:28.
The 50 Mile male podium started with Isaac Schuetz finishing 1st Overall as mentioned above, Andrew Redden finishing 3rd Overall as mentioned above, then Brad Krueger, 32 of Chicago finishing 4th Overall with a time of 7:25:49.
* 50K Race Top Finishers:
The 50K race was led by a previous Chicago Lakefront Ultras 1st place finisher Adrienne Eynon, 43 of Kenilworth, IL this time finishing as the Overall winner and First Female in a time of 3:45:36. The next two finishers were separated by less than a minute with Matt Luff, 41 of Skokie, IL in 3:52:02 and Christopher Allen, 50 of Huntley, IL in 3:52:54. Justin Deffenbacher, 27 of Chicago rounded out the Male podium coming in 4th Overall with a time of 4:26:23. The next two Female finishers were Taylor Barnhill, 27 of Chicago in 4:38:05 (6th Overall) and Lauren Chakraborty, 24 of Chicago in 5:17:37 (16th Overall) rounding out the Female podium.
* Special Awards:
The 50 mile race Overall Top Male Isaac Schuetz, and Overall Top Female Rachel Burke as well as the 50K Overall Top Female Adrienne Eynon, and Overall Top Male Matt Luff earned etched crystal column awards. 10-year top age group winners (one deep for the 50 Mile race and two deep for the 50K race) earned etched Chicago Lakefront Ultras "Made the Podium" pint glasses. Nearly 40% of our runners were either First Time Ultra Finishers or First Time 50 Mile Finishers earning "I Survived My First Ultra" pint glasses. Our friends at Utzy Naturals also provided bottles of Aligen supplement for everyone and Hammer Nutrition provided a couple of nice prizes that were won by random drawing.
