The 100 km and 50 km trail races, also known as GLER, were presented by Syracuse Track Club in cooperation with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation-Central Region. The forecast kept calling for cooler weather, but the day before the races saw a humid 92 ºF.

Race morning had worried chatter about sport drinks and what bottles to carry. The brave counted down to the start and off they ran along the wooded shoreline. Ultimately, Mother Nature blessed race day with a high of only 73 ºF and an occasional shower.

Last year, 50 runners ran a 5 km course around the lakes--flat and fast. As predicted, this year’s entrant list went over 100. Minimizing the event’s footprint on the lake trails required a choice between capping the field at 50 and spreading the runners out on a longer course.

Thus, the 12.5 km course was created. The 5 km lake trail remained, but the runners now had to ascend upland forest and complete a loop of single track through grasses referred to as the Serengeti before returning to the lakes.

There were nine finishers out of the 22 that started the 100 km race. The 100 km winner, Randy Miller, said the mental aspect of doing the loop eight times is what made finishing difficult. Two veterans, Keith Straw and Walter Bird, were second and third overall rounding out the top three coming in under 11 hours.

Two footnotes in the 100 km were the performances of Gary Ferguson and Hanna Ben-Shoan. Ferguson’s eight splits were between 1:30 and 1:36. Considering the varied terrain, it was remarkable pacing. Ms. Ben-Shoan impressed all with her strength through 87.5 km. She then had to make the painstaking decision to attempt lap 8 and the 14 hour cut-off. After much consideration, she chose to stop. Her courage and sportsmanship has a place in GLER history.

The 50 km women’s champion, Katherine Stettler, ran negative splits. Stettler’s last lap was the fastest last lap of all the runners. Jill Perry, a local 26.2 specialist, adapted well to the 50 km trail race finishing second. Masters winner Lorrie Tily was the third woman to go under five hours.

Javier Martinez left everything out on the course as he won the 50 km. Martinez and Ryan O’Dell, came through the first lap in 1:02. Javier then pushed the pace running 57:18 compared to O’Dell’s still very fast 1:00:53 second lap.
Top veteran, Mack Duett, also pushed the second 12.5 km. Running in his local park, Green Lakes, Duett was not ruling out an open win. However, Martinez, didn’t give back much, and hung on for the win. Eleven men finished under 5 hours. Good food was had by all, and the 12.5 km splits left the runners with much to ponder over.
