| | | | | | Race Information | | Description: | | | | | The race is a 50K race along the Chicago lakefront path with an 8-hour time limit (early start option is available if more time is needed).
Race Location
The race start/finish area is at: Jackson Park, Grove 19A and 19B
Address: 5700 E Hayes Drive, Chicago, IL 60649
This is on the west side of Lake Shore Drive, south of the Science and Industry Museum.
The Course (New this year, 8-hour time limit!)
The course will be a 6.25 mile out and back loop (3.1 miles out and 3.1 miles back) on the lakefront path. 50K runners will run this loop 5 times. The course currently is not be a USATF certified course, but we are working to try and certify the course by race day - please contact the RD if you have questions regarding the potential course certification. The approximate course map can be viewed on Map My Run at:

Coronavirus considerations
All in attendance (runners, volunteers, crew, spectators) are required to wear facial coverings/masks (while not running), and observe 6-feet social distancing practices as prescribed by the guidelines of Restore Illinois Phase 4. Runners are subject to a no-touch forehead temperature screening at check in. Facial coverings/masks are especially important around the aid stations, drop bag area, and when in the Grove 19A and 19B areas - basically whenever you are not on the lakefront path course. You will need to bring your own facial covering/mask. We will have hand sanitizer, wipes, etc. available at the aid stations.
Spectators and Crew Support
Crew support will be allowed throughout the course to provide food and hydration. However, your crews and spectators will need to abide by the “Keep it Moving” rules on the lakefront path, so they should be moving while on the path and yield to runners. Crews and spectators on bikes should be extremely careful of pedestrians, runners, and other bikers as the lakefront path will be open to the general public during the race. There is a Divy bike station with about 18 bikes located south of the parking lot at Jackson Park.
No crew or spectators will be allowed in the Grove 19A&B areas at the start of the races. However, they can be in the area after the crowd thins out, but if we start to have too many people in the area, then they will be asked to leave the area and either walk on the lakefront path or return to the parking lot. You are responsible for your crew and spectator’s actions, and failure to follow race official’s directions can result in your disqualification.
Aid Stations
The only aid stations will be in Jackson Park in Grove 19A for the runners starting and finishing in that area and in Grove 19B for the runners starting and finishing in that area. You must stay in your assigned Grove in order for us to abide by the Chicago Park District Permit.
Since the aid stations will be at the start/finish area, you will be at the aid station every 6 miles. Aid stations will have water, Tailwind, Coke, Mountain Dew, Ginger Ale. For food we will have assorted cookies, chips, pretzels, M&M’s, nuts, and some other goodies. Volunteers will be at the aid stations to handle the drink and food items. Volunteers will be wearing masks and gloves. When you approach the aid station, tell the volunteers what food items you would like, and they will put them into a baggie to hand to you. You can carry the baggie with you and continue on the course.
For distributing water and Tailwind, we strongly encourage you to bring your own hand held water bottle, hydration bottles and vest, or reusable cup in order to minimize waste generation from single use cups. Soda will be poured into cups. The volunteers will not handle/touch your bottles, please remove the tops yourself and the volunteer will fill it for you being careful not to touch anything.
You might want some extra aid station supplies and fill extra water bottles when you use the aid station and put those in your drop bag to avoid using the aid station during your next loop. This will help prevent crowding and potential lines/waiting at the aid station.
All runners will need to wear masks when they are in the aid station area. We will also have hand sanitizer, Clorox wipes, paper towels, tissues, etc. If you touch/contaminant anything, please immediately tell a volunteer so that they can clean the area.
You will have access to your drop bag at each loop, so if you are not comfortable with using the aid station supplies, please bring your own supplies and/or have your crew help support you. Note that the aid stations do not have energy gels, so plan accordingly.
Restrooms
We will have portable restrooms located near the basketball courts immediately south of the Grove 19A and 19B start/finish areas, so you will have access to these after each 6 mile loop. There are no other facilities on the course. Restroom facilities/buildings maintained by the Chicago Park District have remained closed due to the Coronavirus.
Drop Bag Areas
There will be large designated drop bag areas in each Grove in order to help with social distancing. The drop bag areas will be tarps, and they will be open to the elements. The extra space should allow everyone to have their own space without being too close to each other. Please do not crowd the space and do not touch/move other people’s stuff.
I have always found that using a small cooler works great as a drop bag. That gives you something protected from the elements, and if it is a hard-sided cooler, it gives you a place to sit, if needed.
Packet Pickup / Runner Check-In
All participants must check in on race morning prior to the start of their event. Packet pickup will take place near the race start/finish area, Jackson Park Grove 19A or 19B, specifically under the Lake Shore Drive pedestrian tunnel located down the hill and east of the parking lot. Packet pickup will begin at 7:00am and conclude prior to the start of each event.
At packet pickup, you will sign a race waiver and receive your timing chip ankle bracelet, bib number, pins, race shirt. Your race number needs to be visible at all times on the front of your body. You will be assigned to either Grove 19A or 19B where you can stage your drop bag (if you have one) and that will be your start/turnaround location for the race.
Awards
Everyone will receive a tech shirt. All 50K finishers (including early starters) will receive a finishers metal. First place overall male and female for each race will receive a plaque.
Early Starters
If you would like to start early for either race, please contact me at ChicagoLakefrontRD@gmail.com to let me know. We are trying to keep track of the number of runners that will be at the start lines to help with social distancing.
Parking
There is plenty of parking at the Jackson Park location. There are large parking lots immediately south of Grove 19A and 19B (on the north side of Hayes Drive) and also on the south side of Hayes Drive. There is also limited free parking along the street on Hayes Drive, but do not park in the Tow Zones. Parking in the parking lots is paid parking using the Park Chicago app or the meter stations.
