The 23rd annual spring edition of the Chicago Lakefront Ultras 50k returned to the normal south-side course after having been cancelled in 2020 due to the initial onset of Covid-19, then modified short-loop course in 2021 due to Covid-19 protocols that were in place at that time. It felt like we were back to normal finally...running in freezing temperatures and bone chilling wind!

As of race morning we were expecting 72 runners to toe the line, but either the snow, wind, injuries, or failed alarm clock resulted in only 58 runners picking up their packets and lining up for the start. Evelyn Smith and Boris Tannenbaum elected to start off early, then the remaining pack started precisely at 8:30am. Pretty much everyone that started was determined to finish as we had 55 finishers for a 95% finishing rate. I guess that high finishing rate should be expected given that we had a "pretty good weather" day for the race (compared to some doozies we've had in the past).

The race was quickly lead by Nolan McKenna. He had planned to run his first ultra fast, and that he did, finishing well ahead of the rest of the pack in 3:16:04. But there was a fairly close group that formed behind him with positions changing throughout the race until Vincent DiFrancesco took the second place finish breaking 4 hours with 3:56:26, followed by Zachary Sweet with a time of 4:00:07 (unfortunately Zachary started 37 seconds after the gun, so while he ran faster than 4 hours, his official finishing time was just 7 seconds off that mark).

On the women's side, there was a very tight group leading the race into the first loop and even into the second loop. In the end, Rosalie Shyu took the win (her second win in the Chicago Lakefront Ultras) with a time of 4:30:15 followed closely by Taylor Barnhill just 2 minutes behind in 4:32:11, and Rachel Burke taking third in 4:43.19.

We also want to recognize a few runners that thought nothing of running a cold, muddy Paleozoic 50k just seven days earlier and came out to finish the Chicago Lakefront 50k to complete the "Back-to-Back Ultra Challenge" earning a highly coveted etched pint glass.  These amazing individuals included Jodi Haefner, Edna Jackeline Vazquez, Latoya McGuire, and Edwin Cook.

The Overall Top Male Nolan McKenna, and Overall Top Female Rosalie Shyu earned etched crystal column awards. 10-year top-three age group winners earned etched Chicago Lakefront Ultras "made the podium" pint glasses. About 20% of our runners were First Time Ultra Finishers earning "I Survived My First Ultra" pint glasses.

Let's give a huge shout out and thanks to the ultra running community of volunteers who generously staffed the aid stations and start/finish line activities...

* Burnham Park - Flatlander Ultrarunners:

Jimmy Jones (Captain), Jen Birkner, Dave Secord, Rob Brown, Tammy Hellings, and Michael Eriks. As always, Jimmy fired up his Coleman grill and served up brats and hot dogs throughout the day. Special thanks to Jen Birkner for having the foresight to pack 2 gallons of the best Ramen in the city and serve it to cold and weary runners (Note that Jimmy is reported to have scoffed at Jen saying "Ramen? That's a stupid idea!").

* Start/Finish Area at Jackson Park:

Mandi Florip - Brought the Dunkin' coffee and delicious donut holes that fueled both runners and volunteers throughout the day. Mandi got there early and handed out everyone's Packet Pickup before running two loops of the course as a Course Marshal and training run.

Meghan Newton - You might remember Meghan from the fall 50/50. Meghan helped with Packet Pickup, then worked the Aid Station all day, helped hand out awards, and stayed until the end to tear down and pack everything away.

Marc Anguiano - Also a multi-time repeat volunteer, got there early to help setup the start/finish area then took to the course to take pictures and help out any way he could. Marc is credited with taking the start video footage too.

Jill Perry - Trained for months for this to be her first ultra, but came down with tendonitis within days of the race. Jill made the most of it by volunteering instead, working the Aid Station and soaking in the positive vibes as well as giving them out to all the runners.

Beth McCloskey - Beth has been probably been to more Chicago Lakefront Ultras than I have, volunteering at the finish line handing out medals and awards. A lifetime achievement award might be appropriate for all the hours Beth has devoted to the Chicago Lakefront Ultras over the years.
