10th Annual Fall-Season Paleozoic 50-Km and 25-Km
Trail Runs!

This rollicking tenth annual fall celebration of "going long" made its triumphant return to our `south racecourse` within the Sag Valley System - Region 7.  Due to retrictions caused by the Coronavirus / COVID-19 pandemic we haven't been able to chart this course in three years... so nice to be back.  Our south racecourse is a wonderful mix of wide crushed gravel paths and sometimes narrower more rugged dirt trails.  Each out-n-back lap totals a running distance of 7.767 miles. 50-Km = two laps; 25-Km = one lap.  Set up with its start/finish aid station at Palos Park Woods-North Grove #1, and satellite aid station at the intersection of Will-Cook Road and the Green Trail.  Permian Fall II marked the ninth time on our `south racecourse`, and twentieth running of our semiannual race, which has always featured the event distances of 50 kilometers and 25 kilometers.

Rather raw conditions endured throughout the day with temperatures ranging from 34˚ - 36˚F, with persistent wind and sporadic light precipitation. But runners took advantage of a dry/fast racecourse with long stretches blanketed under layers of fallen leaves.  Paleozoic runners are an opportunist breed and despite a few slips, falls, and bruises this version, Permian Fall II boasted an astounding finishing rate of 98.4%!

The 25 Kilometer race...
Returning after a 7-year abscence, past Paleozoic champion Daniel Regalado topped the podium, persued by Ismael Rubiano in second place, with young John Hockenberry in third overall. Amanda Cortese led the fairer sex, closely persued by Alexandra Curatolo in second place, and Jennifer Aguilar in third overall female.

The 50 Kilometer ultramarathon...
From the start Andy Jellema set a blistering pace, which he increased by 4-5 minutes at each checkpoint. Dan Kittivanichkulkrai, 2-weeks following his 6:45 1st place finish at Chicago Lakefront Ultras 50-Mile, posted fast-and-amazingly-even splits for second place overall. Courtlan Coppler finished third overall on the podium. Paleozoic Vet Marta Borkowska outran all other female competition, with Lindsay Fideli in second place, followed closely by Daria Pruska in third.

Nearing the finish line...
Circling the black-walnut-obstacled `parade loop`, through the Paleozoic feather flags, under the race banner, across the finish line timing mats, awaiting all runners... customized finisher-medals, special awards, optional beer, and the drawing-them-in-siren-sound of cheering race enthusiasts.  First-time ultramarathon finishers earned "My First Ultra" pint-glass awards.  Five-time Paleozoic finishers collected special zipper-draw-string shoe bag awards.  Ten-time-finisher special pint-glasses were earned by Mark Bowman and Boris Tannenbaum. Crossing the finish line for her 15th time, Margie Hockenberry earned earned a very special 15-Time Finisher ball cap. She chose `black` to compliment the color of the only other 15-finish ball cap ever earned, incidentally by her husband, who chose `maroon`. Leading all veteran-paleo-dinosaur-multitime finishers are Les Hockenberry with 17 finishes - 357.421 miles, and Margie Hockenberry with 15 finishes - 279.681 miles!

A never-before-achieved accomplishment by a very special runner...
At 12:10 in the afternoon Andy Thomson crossed the finish line of the 25-Km and became the the first-ever runner to complete an event distance of every race hosted/produced by RunRace for the calendar year! Yep, in addition to Permian Fall II, in 2022 Andy raced Winter Challenge Cross Country IV in January, Paleozoic Trail Runs - Carboniferous Spring II in March, Chicago Lakefront 50K in March, 11th Annual Chicago Full Moon Run charity race in July, 9th Annual Terra Sans Pave Trail Runs in August, Chicago Lakefront 50/50 in October. Along the journey he tallied 154.7 miles in achieving this daring act of distance running. In appreciation, Andy was presented with a coveted `RunRace - I'm Connected` hoodie sweatshirt.
Inspired by Andy it is our intention to introduce an oficial race series for calendar year 2023... please watch for upcoming announcements.
